The recent warmer weather has the Quebec Lifesaving Society issuing a warning to fans of ice fishing, snowmobiling and other outdoor winter activities.
The Society says the ice sheets currently covering Quebec's rivers and lakes are dangerously thin, which greatly increases the risk of accidents. As a result, anglers, skiers, snowmobilers and skaters are being strongly discouraged against venturing out onto frozen waters.
Generally, ice that is 12cm thick can support the weight of a snowmobile. bit if the ice has experienced frequent freezing and thawing its quality could have deteriorated.
The society says it's advisable to wear a floating thermal suit or personal flotation device over top of snowsuits and recommends you carry the following survival equipment if you venture out:
The Lifesaving Society urges sports enthusiasts to check with local authorities about ice conditions and ice safety in their area before venturing onto waterways and invites snowmobilers and all-vehicle drivers to stay on marked trails.
Each year, about 7 Quebeckers lose their lives by drowning during the winter. In the majority of cases, deaths occur by walking, playing hockey, fishing, or snowmobiling and mountain biking on thin ice.
