The TVA network has formally apologized for a story it ran earlier this week that suggested members of two Cote-des-Neiges mosques asked for female construction workers to be barred from a nearby work site.
It published that apology on its web site on Friday morning.
"The report was based on testimony from two entrepreneurs Tuesday night," the apology read. "However, the stories we got from those people have changed since yesterday.
"TVA Nouvelles regrets this situation and wishes to apologize to the various stakeholders and viewers who have been affected by this story."
The story sparked outrage, and extreme-right groups like Storm Alliance and La Meute planned a protest. Police were posted outside one of the mosques on Friday morning, and death threats had been made on social media.
Officials at the the Ahl-Ill Bait and the Baitul-Mukarram mosques never made the request to have female construction workers barred, and Quebec's construction commission found no evidence of the request.
It seems someone who lived in the community had made the comments — someone with no connection to the mosques.
The network says is conducting an internal investigation.
