Montreal police are investigating the first homicide of 2018, which claimed the life of a 61-year-old grandmother at 1910 rue Guy-Bouchard in Lasalle.
Police received the call to 9-1-1 around 11:15pm Sunday night. When officers arrived they found the the woman In front of her home with stab wounds to her back.
There is blood on the icy sidewalk out front, as well as on the stairs and landing of a neighbour who the woman tried to reach for help.
A police spokesperson said the victim told the first officers on the scene that she had been attacked by her daughter, known to police to suffer from a mentail illness. The victim was rushed to hospital in critical condition, but died of her injuries.
Building manager, Denis Germain, said the victim had been renting the Lasalle apartment with her daughter for more than two years and now had an infant grandchild.
“The daughter, every time I spoke with her she was fine. No outbursts or anything like that,” said Germain. “As far as I know, she was taking good care of her baby and all that. She used to go for walks in the park in the summer with her mum and the baby. I spoke to her a few times because I’m the manager there.”
There had been a few noise complaints by neighbours in recent weeks, but by the time building management arrived at the address, the disturbances were always over.
Germain said the two women and child have lived at the address without incident until just recently.
“This is the second time in about ten days, a week to ten days, because she tried to strangle her the last time. She tried to strangle her mum,” said Germain.
Germain said police arrived on-scene “in no time,” adding that a female police officer was seen removing the child from the home to a waiting police van following the attack.
Until the first incident about ten days ago, Germain said they were always quiet and “good people.”
