Dozens of police officers remain at the scene of a shooting in east Toronto that left two people dead, including the suspected gunman, and 13 others wounded.
The incident began at about 10 p.m. on Sunday in the Greektown neighbourhood, when a man armed with a handgun made his way down Danforth Avenue, firing as he went.
Police Chief Mark Saunders says a woman was killed and a girl, aged eight or nine, was in critical condition.
Few details were available about the other victims, and no motive was immediately released.
Witnesses posted many photos and videos, including a clip that appears to show a man, clad in black with a bag at his side, walk a few steps before lifting his arms in front of him as gunshots ring out.
Saunders said the shooter had exchanged fire with police officers and died at the scene.
He could not immediately confirm whether the unnamed gunman was hit by police fire, but he said that no officers were injured.
The Special Investigations Unit will determine how the man died, and whether there was any police wrongdoing.
The unit is an arm's-length agency that is automatically called in to investigate all deaths and serious injuries where police are involved.
