Montreal police said an 18-year old man has been released under a promise to appear in court sometime the next few mothts, to face charges including fleeing the scene, driving while impaired, car theft and mischief under $5,000 following a hit and run in the Mile End district early Sunday.
Police say the young driver he hit a 28-year-old pedestrian crossing St-Laurent Blvd. near Bernard Ave around 2:15 a.m. The car then hit a street light.
A taxi driver left his car to help the 28-year old victim, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Police say in the confusion, the suspect commandeered the taxi and made a break for it.
He was located some 30 kilometres away, in the Sainte-Rose district of Laval with the help of the cabbie's taxi company, which placed a call over the dispatch radio for drivers to be on alert for the stolen taxi cab .
The teen was released Sunday night.
