Valérie Plante raised a few eyebrows during question period at the Montreal city council meeting Monday night when she said she would be willing to consider some sort of ceremony to commemorate the memory of Fredy Villanueva, a young man who was shot and killed by police during a confrontation in a park in Montreal North in 2008.
The Journal de Montreal says that when asked by an actor who plays the role of Villanueva's brother in a local play if her administration was open to creation of a memorial or mural in the neighbourhood to commemorate the event, Plante said that mistakes were made , "that cost the life" of a "young man who did not deserve to die,"
Plante said she was willing to work on the issue with the mayor of Montreal North Christine Black.
Black responded in writing saying she was surprised by Plante's position on what she described as a very polarizing issue.
