With all talk of super heroes taking down a mad titan or slaying the night, let's talk about a real hero.
Last week 8-year-old Chance and 10-year-old Skylar Coburn were in the backseat of their great-grandmother Nita's car while she was taking her daughter to the Atrium Medical Center in Middletown, Ohio.
Nita got out, helping her daughter into a wheelchair and then into the emergency, leaving Chance and Skylar in the backseat for as much time as it takes to walk to the front door.
Those few seconds could have ended in tragedy had it not been for Chance's quick thinking.
As Nita was walking the woman to the front door of the hospital a man who had been sitting on a bench just outside the hospital jumped into the front seat of the car and tried to drive off, not only with the vehicle but with the children.
That's when Chance unbuckled his seatbelt, opened the car door and tried to escape with his sister but the suspect allegedly grabbed onto Skylar's hoodie. Refusing to let go, Chance continued to struggle with the grown man, ultimately pulling his sister free.
Nita saw the man trying to drive off with her vehicle and ran after him.
Unaware her great-grandkids were no longer in the backseat, she opened the front door and tried to gain control of the wheel. The suspect pushed her off, locked the door and again tried to flee the scene. Nita then held onto the locked driver's side door, trying to get at the alleged car thief and kidnapper. According to police the great-grandmother was dragged by the vehicle until she could no longer hold on.
The entire ordeal was caught on surveillance recording from outside the hospital. Video released by the Middletown Police Department shows Nita running after the car and as she approaches the vehicle Chance and Skylar are seen tumbling out the back.
"This little guy is a hero. No question," Middletown Police Chief Rodney Muterspaw said in a Friday statement on Facebook. "He pulled his sister out of the car with no concern for his own safety. That is incredible at his age."
The alleged thief and kidnapper, 24-year-old Dalvir Singh, didn't get far. Officers found the stolen vehicle a couple blocks away and arrested the man. He has since been charged with kidnapping, grand theft and felonious assault.
