BIXI is testing something out, it hopes will make using the bikes safer at night.
It's installing lasers.
Starting tomorrow, 55 bikes will be equipped with the lasers which will project a green bicycle icon 5 metres ahead of the rider.
The idea is to increase visibility among pedestrians and motorists.
The technology comes from a British company that's already been installed on London's bike sharing network.
It's being used on 12,000 bikes and officials there have found that it dramatically increases visibility.
So far in Montreal this season there have been about 20 accidents involving BIXI bikes and visibility was one of the factors in the accidents.
The lasers cost $150 per bike, for a total of less than $10,000 for all 55 bikes.
