The federal government is moving ahead with its promise to legalize marijuana. Justice Minister, Jody Wilson-Raybould, told CJAD news the Trudeau "government is committed to introducing legislation this spring that would, as promised, legalize, strictly regulate, and restrict access to cannabis."
Earlier media reports said Canadians should be able to smoke marijuana, legally, by July 1, 2018. The Minister didn't confirm that date, saying instead that "the legislation will need to pass through the parliamentary process in a timely fashion" for marijuana to be legalized.
Legislation to legalize marijuana will be tabled in the House of Commons this spring.
It is expected that the federal government will be responsible for maintaining and monitoring the supply of the drug, while each province determines where it will be sold and for how much.
The marijuana "smoking-age" will be set at 18 years old, but each province will have the right to impose its own restrictions.
Anyone wishing to grow their own pot would be limited to four plants per household.
