About 300 nurses and nursing assistants at the Pierre-Le Gardeur Hospital in Terrebonne have joined Montreal, Laval and Longueuil police officers, paramedics in Montreal and Laval and special constables at the Montreal courthouse in wearing the colourful protest pants.
The number is expected to grow in the coming days, and a custom sweater with a patch that reads "Prisoners of our Work" will be made for those who wish to wear them as well.
The President of the local Federation Interprofessionnelle de la Santé (FIQ) told the Journal de Montreal members are tired of mandatory overtime; a practice the union said has been in place for several months.
The FIG said the Integrated Center for Health and Social Services (CISSS) management has reduced the number of positions over the last year, and its members have been forced into a rotating mandatory overtime schedule to make up for the lack of available nurses.
Hospital management told the newspaper those involved in the protest will be informed they must wear their appropriate uniform while at work.
