As many motorists continue to deal with the aftermath of a massive pileup on Ontario's Highway 401 on Saturday, one woman is just happy to be reunited with her best friend.
Kelly, currently living in Quebec, was on the 401 near the Bowmanville area when she ran in to the same whiteout that about 100 other vehicles hit as well. Visibility quickly hit zero, and the slippery roads resulted in a spectacular multi-vehicle crash that miraculously resulted in only minor injuries.
"I saw the death in front of me. I thought, 'Okay I'm not going to make it,'" Kelly told CTV News. She swerved in order to avoid the wreck and ended up in a ditch on the side of the highway. "It's going to be really bad and I'm not going to die in a nice way, it's going to be awful."
Moments later a transport truck did the same, but flipped off the road and landed on the roof of her car.
In the car with her was her dog Nemi.
As soon as the transport truck crushed the roof of her car Kelly said she heard Nemi cry out and feared the worst.
Kelly managed to escape the wreckage, but her dog was nowhere to be found. Kelly and several others who were now stranded on the highway searched for Nemi, but were unable to find her.
As luck would have it, Nemi ran along the highway and was found by a couple from Port Hope, Ont. who brought her home to get her out of the freezing temperatures and have her checked by a veterinarian.
On Sunday, a full day after the crash, Kelly and Nemi were reunited thanks to work by the volunteers at Team Chelsea, a group that helps search for lost pets in the Oshawa and Durham regions.
