The deadline to install your winter tires is Friday, unless you're the STM.
The Quebec law doesn't apply to the transit corporation because it says there are currently no winter tires available for its buses on the market. Instead the STM uses its own system to improve traction in the snow filled months.
"So what we do is we provide our buses with new tires on the front and traction tires for the rear wheels. It is really sort of a homemade recipe but that works for us," Philippe Dery of the STM told CTV Montreal.
Dery said all regular tires are modified by November 15, in order to meet STM standards.
Bus drivers also radio back to headquarters to inform the dispatcher of any trouble spots that need fixing. A call is then made to the City to have the area cleared or salted for the buses.
As with everything in life, the system isn't perfect and there will be hiccups.
On Tuesday, during Montreal's first major snow storm the STM reported 12 minor incidents which Dery called "normal."
"In rush hour we have 1,400 buses on the road so unfortunately incidents are bound to happen, but luckily there were only a few of them," said Dery. "Unfortunately the one on Cote-des-Neiges happened near a busy intersection where many bus routes came so it had a larger effect overall. It was a normal day for the STM."
