The wife of a Quebecer stuck in Cuba says she just wants him to return home.
Kahina Bensaadi, who lives in Mascouche, spoke with CTV after Touffik Benhamiche, a father of two, was charged with criminal negligence after a 2017 deadly boating accident killed an Ontario woman.
The ruling was overturned on appeal, but, he still in the island nation.
"As I now percieve it, probably that boat was by itself too powerful, it would take a trained pilot, which they didn't require or explain", said
Montreal lawyer Julius Grey, who also spoke with CTV.
Benhamiche lost control of the boat, and ultimately killed a woman.
He was eventually found guilty of criminal negligence causing death, and sentenced to four years in prison.
Bensaadi says their children don't understand why he hasn't come back, adding they miss him very much.
The prosecution is still reviewing the case.
Among others, Bensaadi is appealing to the federal government.
Global Affairs Canada issued in a statement, "consular officials in Havana, Cuba, are in contact with local authorities to gather further information on the status of his case."
Bensaadi said the wait is overwhelming: facing the financial responsibility, taking care of two daughters, continuing to work, and working to defend her husband all at once.
