Medical accessory fees are no more.
Starting today the ban on extra charges to the patient goes into effect, despite many questions still needing answers.
Quebec Health Minister Gaétan Barrette did strike a deal with optometrists, dentists, and pharmacists Wednesday, allowing them to work and be compensated, however the two largest physicians federations is another story.
The government and the Federation of General Practitioners have managed a partial agreement for compensation for minor surgeries, including vasectomies. There is still no full deal to cover the costs once paid by patients.
There is no deal with the Federation of Medical Specialists.
Even without global deals, extra medical fees are still illegal for services that are covered by Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ). If you are charged for a service, you can report it to RAMQ.
Quebecers will still be charged for non health services, including filling out paper work, making photocopies or delivering blood samples. Barrette said these services are not covered under Medicare.
