The Montreal International Auto Showgets underway at Palais des congres until January 29: see bold and beautiful cars from the likes of Fiat, Cadillac and Jaguar. What I’m keen to check out: all the virtual reality games that will allow you to test drive a range of cars, and also Nissan’s digital mirror that allows you to picture yourself as a Stormtrooper from Star Wars. Take a tumble down the incline of St Denis Street for theHivernale Soapbox Race, or Descente Saint-Denis. On Saturday, competitors will fling the homemade cars down a 280-metre obstacle course in order to vie for a $3,000 purse.
Bouge d’ici Dance Festival is a small, indie fest now in its eighth year: the big draw is a double bill of hyper-talented solo female dancers that hit it big at the 2016 Fringe Festival. The charismatic Maxine Segalowitz performs Sexpectations, followed by a striking Natasha Perry-Fagant in the surreal David Lynch Wet Dream. Friday night and Saturday at 4pm, at MainLine. There is also an open dance competition on Friday, and the closing cabaret and dance party on Saturday.
Comedy is a *big* draw this weekend: the queen of deadpan Heidi Foss headlines at Comedyworks and surrealist American comedic Emo Phllips is at the Comedy Nest.
Visual Improv pairs up deaf and hearing improvisers to make silent (but funny) comedy onstage. There are interpretors... and money raised from sales goes towards volunteer group Seeing Voices Montreal. Saturday night at Montreal Improv on the Main below des Pins.
A nice mild weather weekend for dancing in the Old Port: Igloofestreturns for weekend two! The theme for the weekend (and gentle suggestion for costuming: is glitter and glowsticks! DJs performing tonight include Robert Robert and Mr Nokturn.
And I love the burlesque lineup at the Wiggle Room this weekend: Saturday night hosts the No Doubt about Gwen Stefani tribuete show and Friday is a homage to Leonard Cohen himself, just blocks away from his iconic Plateau home.
If you wanted to get in on the action in DC for the Women’s March on Washington but could not make it, head to Place-des-Arts metro at 11am on Saturday for the inclusive satellite protest.
